Steve Forbert is a Meridian, Mississippi born singer-songwriter. Anointed the “new Dylan” upon his 1978 debut album Alive on Arrival. Forbert’s second album 1979’s Jackrabbit Slim was his most successful outing, reaching the Top 20 on the strength of the hit single “Romeo’s Tune” (allegedly inspired by the late Supreme Florence Ballard. The signature piano part on “Romeo’s Tune” was played by former Elvis Presley pianist Bobby Ogdin. Forbert’s first four albums were all Billboard charting.
Forbert learned guitar at age 11 and spent his high-school years playing in a variety of local bands before quitting his job as a truck driver and moving to New York City at age 21. There, he performed for spare change in Grand Central Station before working his way up to the Manhattan club circuit.
Seeking new inspirations Forbert relocated to Nashville, Tennessee in 1985 spending the next decade there. Forbert’s Jimmie Rodgers tribute album Any Old Time, was nominated for a 2004 Grammy in the Best Traditional Folk category. Forbert was inducted into the Mississippi Music Hall of Fame in 2006, and in 2007 Keith Urban covered his hit “Romeo’s Tune.” That same year Forbert’s music was featured in the Nicole Kidman film Margot at the Wedding.
Forbert continues to steadily make music. His songs have been recorded by such artists as Rosanne Cash, Keith Urban, Marty Stuart, and Webb Wilder. In 2017, a tribute album, An American Troubadour: The Songs of Steve Forbert, was released, with covers of his songs by twenty-one artists. Forbert’s debut album Alive on Arrival was chosen as one of the greatest debut albums ever in the book Please Allow Me To Introduce Myself. In 2018 Forbert released his 18th studio album The Magic Tree.
