Grammy winner, guitarist, singer, producer, songwriter and bandleader Steve Freund, praised by Rolling Stone for his “masterful, no-nonsense guitar work” continues to share his feeling for the blues wherever he can.
He is one of the great torchbearers of traditional Chicago Blues, Steve has appeared on over 50 albums and produced seven. In October 2017, he was part of an upcoming Delmark recording called Back To Chicago by the Rockwell Avenue Blues Band.
Steve appeared at the 2018 Chicago Blues Festival with the Rockwell Avenue Blues Band. Steve’s most recent solo recording, Come On In This House received a great deal of critical acclaim when released in 2014. His third studio album, Lonesome Flight was released by 9 Below Productions in 2010 and included nine original songs along with four blues classics. He also has two solo records released on the historic Delmark label, C For Chicago, and I’ll Be Your Mule. Steve also played on Koko Taylor‘s Grammy–winning Blues Explosion. Originally from NYC, Steve began his career in Chicago as a second guitar behind Hubert Sumlin, Lee Jackson, Homesick James, Louis Myers, and many others. He spent two years working with Big Walter Horton and Floyd Jones, learning the deep blues and the idiosyncrasies that are part of the art. In 1978, he became Sunnyland Slim’s main guitarist, playing just about every gig with the piano legend until the time of his death. Freund became the consummate piano accompanist working with Pinetop Perkins, Jimmy Walker, Henry Gray, Erwin Helfer and many more. He also spent nine years working with harmonica legend James Cotton.
Sid Morris
Raised in Houston, Texas before moving to the South Bay, blues pianist Sid Morris has been a fixture in the San Francisco area blues scene since 1972 and recently moved to Folsom. In the early 70’s, Sid was mentored by Alberto Gianquinto, the pianist in the original James Cotton Band. He has performed at the San Francisco Blues Festival 5 times and also in Europe. Sid’s main influences are Otis Spann, Ray Charles, Amos Milburn, Professor Longhair, Floyd Dixon. His piano style is primarily Chicago blues, but also his passion for West Coast and New Orleans blues comes alive when he’s workin’ the 88”s. The past three years, he has been one of the prominent faces and voices in the citywide Mardi Gras Festival events.
Sid has recorded and worked with many Bay Area blues artists for the last several decades that include Steve Freund, Alabama Mike, Gary Smith, Filmore Slim, Terry Hanck, Aki Kumar, Andy Santana, and Ron Thompson. He also recorded on the iconic Blue Bay album from 1976 which included several blues legends such as Charlie Musselwhite, Luther Tucker and Sonny Rhodes. Sid’s own CD, Take Me Back, offers a variety of blues piano styles and features guitar phenom Kid Andersen as well as an assortment of Greaseland regulars.
