Alice Merton is a German-Canadian-English singer songwriter. Merton achieved mainstream success with her debut single, “No Roots.”
Merton was born in Frankfurt, Germany to a German mother and a British father. The family moved frequently due her father’s job as a mining consultant. Merton grew up in Oakville, Ontario, Canada learning classical piano and singing. When she was thirteen her family relocated to Munich, Germany. While there Merton wrote her first song while attending a German language high school before graduating and moving to England.
Merton moved frequently in her early life living in Canada, New York, Germany, and London. Merton has stated that she has felt the strongest connections to Canada, England, Germany, and France where her mother lived. Merton has a bachelor’s degree in composition and songwriting.
Merton co-founded the record label Paper Plane Records International and released the song “No Roots” in 2016. The song’s lyrics were inspired by her feeling that there is no one place she calls home. On the basis of her “No Roots” success Merton released an EP with the same name in February 2017. The single “No Roots” was a top ten hit worldwide and was featured in an episode of the NBC TV series The Blacklist.
In September 2018 Merton issued the single “Why So Serious” from the upcoming debut album Mint set for release in January 2019.
