Big Something is an American alternative six-piece jam band from North Carolina that fuses rock, funk, pop, and even a bit of improv. The band has released three studio albums, as well as a number of live recordings. Their first studio album, Songs From the Middle of Nowhere, won the Home Grown Music Network’s 2010 Album of the Year award.

Big Something is known for their high-energy live performances, and are a popular staple at many music festivals on the East coast. They have opened for The B52s, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, Galactic, and other bands in their genre. Big Something also hosts their own annual music festival, The Big What, in Mebane, North Carolina.

The band started in the Maryland area under the name “Anonymous” before evolving into Big Something.

Big Something formed in 2009 and released their first studio album, Songs from the Middle of Nowhere, in 2010. Between studio recordings, the band released a live album Live from Uranus. The band then released their second, self-titled album in 2013. The sophomore album garnered three different Album of the Year awards from Angelica Music, Endless Boundaries radio and the Home Grown Music Network.

Their fourth full length studio album was produced by John Custer (Corrosion of Conformity). Recorded at Echo Mountain Studios in Asheville, N.C., Tumbleweed features eight tracks that span over an hour’s worth of mind bending music.

Big Something grooves tightly with polished precision. Tumbleweed offers jam out thrills and audio splendor, but it also showcases just the right amount of variety to keep things fresh and exciting, which is paramount when the songs are between five to ten minutes long. It’s an incredibly satisfying, if not innovative, release that fuses alternative rock, psych rock, reggae rock, and funk with sprinkles of electronica and a dash of bluegrass that purrs with enough signature brilliance that makes it sound all their own. Standouts include “Tumbleweed,” “Song For Us,” “Passenger,” “In The Middle,” and “Waves.”
