Catfish and the Bottlemen are a Welsh indie rock band formed in Llandudno, Wales in 2007. Their debut album, The Balcony achieved platinum status in 2016. In May 2016, the band released their second album, The Ride which went on to sell more than 100,000 copies in the UK. The band’s sound has been likened to Johnny Marr, The Cribs, Feeder and Mystery Jets.
The band derives its name from McCann’s first childhood musical memory, that of a Sydney, Australian street busker playing beer bottles strung to a wire who went by the name Catfish the Bottleman.
Catfish and the Bottlemen, formerly known as “The Prestige,” came together when Ryan “Van” McCann and William Bibby (Billy Bibby) began playing guitar in their parent’s home, a bed and breakfast in Llandudno, Wales. The duo were joined by Benji Blakeway on bass as the third founding member. Schoolmate Jon Barr joined shortly thereafter on drums. Original drummer Barr was replaced by Bob Hall in 2010, while Jonathan Bond replaced lead guitarist Bibby who left the band unexpectedly in 2014.
In 2013 the band released their first three singles, “Homesick,” “Rango” and “Pacifier.” In 2014, the band released the single “Kathleen,” which topped MTV’s hottest tracks in spring 2014. Catfish and the Bottlemen released their debut album The Balcony in America in January 2015. The following day the band performed on the Late Show with David Letterman.
In May 2016 the band released their second album The Ride, which charted number one on the UK Albums Chart.
In January 2019, Catfish and the Bottlemen released a new single “Longshot,” off their third album, The Balance.
