If you blended the influence of Bob Dylan, Radiohead, Fiona Apple, The Smiths and U2, the result could be the “Cold War Kids.” The quintet met at the Bible Institute in Los Angeles and later jelled as a band while practicing in a local space above a restaurant called Mulberry Street in Fullerton, California.
On a European tour in Budapest, bassist Matt Maust saw children playing in a park filled with derelict statues from a previous regime. He thought of three words: “Cold War Kids” and that’s how they got their name.
CWK grew from blog darlings into a band with a contemporary yet classic sound. Founding members vocalist, guitarist, pianist Nathan Willett, bassist Matt Maust, drummer Matt Aveiro, and guitarist Jonnie Russell began crafting their soulful, blues-inflected take on indie rock in 2004.
A few EP’s and raves for their web site from fellow blogging fans followed and Cold War Kids signed into the big time record label Downtown Records and their debut album “Robbers & Cowards” was released. After two years of touring, they moved permanently to Long Beach.
Each of the four succeeding albums have received better reviews and better chart positions.
