Fiona Apple McAfee-Maggart is an American singer-songwriter and pianist, born in New York. Classically trained on piano as a child, Apple began composing her own songs when she was eight years old. As Apple became more proficient playing piano she would play along with jazz standard compositions through which she discovered Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald, who became major influences in her work.
Apple’s debut album Tidal was written when she was 17. She received a Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance for the single “Criminal” and followed up with the critically acclaimed and platinum certified When the Pawn… in 1999. Its full title is a poem Apple wrote after reading letters regarding an article that appeared in an earlier issue of Spin magazine that had cast her in a negative light. The title’s length earned her a spot temporarily in the Guinness Book of Records for longest title.
Extraordinary Machine is the third album by American singer-songwriter Fiona Apple, released by Epic Records in the United States on October 4, 2005. Produced by Jon Brion, it was expected to be released in 2003 but was delayed several times by the record label without explanation, leading to speculation that a dispute had arisen over its commercial appeal.
In 2009, Extraordinary Machine was named the 49th best album of the 2000s by Rolling Stone magazine. The album was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album in 2006.
In 2014, Apple wrote the opening theme, “Container” for the Showtime drama The Affair. In 2017 Apple released “Tiny Hands” for the Women’s March on Washington. In 2018 she joined Shirley Manson at the female-driven Girl School Festival in Los Angeles for a cover of “You Don’t Own Me” by Lesley Gore.
As fans await a follow up to Apple’s 2012 album The Idler Wheel…, she has unveiled a tender new acoustic song titled “I Can’t Wait to Meet You,” the singer’s contribution to Hopes and Dreams: The Lullaby Project that collects poems by pregnant women and turns them into music from artists such as Roseanne Cash, Rhiannon Giddens, Natalie Merchant and others.
