James Olliges Jr., professionally known as Jim James is an American vocalist, guitarist, producer, and primary songwriter for the rock band My Morning Jacket. James is also a member of the American supergroup Monsters of Folk which released their debut album in 2009. He has also released three solo albums.
James grew up in Louisville, Kentucky briefly attending the University of Kentucky. Prior to forming My Morning Jacket James was the vocalist and guitarist with the group Month of Sundays.
As vocalist, producer, and lead songwriter for My Morning Jacket James has been instrumental in defining the band’s sound. In 2006 Esquire magazine awarded him an “Esky” for best songwriter of that year for their music awards.
James typically plays rhythm guitar, acoustic guitar, and occasional lead guitar on My Morning Jacket songs. James played the role of the band leader in the Bob Dylan biopic I’m Not There with Calexico as his backing band. Rolling Stone magazine listed James among their “20 New Guitar Gods.”
James contributed vocals on The Decemberists’ 2009 album The Hazards of Love. The same year James released a tribute EP covering George Harrison songs with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary. In 2014 James recorded for Lost on the River: The New Basement Tapes alongside Elvis Costello, Marcus Mumford, Taylor Goldsmith and Rhiannon Giddens. The T-Bone produced album compilation of partial songs written by Bob Dylan that were never released. James released his debut solo album, Regions of Light and Sound of God in 2013. In 2018 James released the companion piece solo albums, Uniform Distortion and Uniform Clarity. James is currently writing songs for the next My Morning Jacket album.
