Since June 22, 1985, singer-songwriter John Moreland has been living on Tulsa time; his family moved a lot because his dad changed jobs. Moreland has recently relocated back in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
He’s a self-taught guitarist and played his first show in his early teens. During high school he was a member of local punk and hardcore bands. Moreland’s influences yield what he calls music “that is gloriously and joyfully heartbreaking.”
Musicians such as Steve Earle, Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt inspired him as he self-produced records and sells them through mail-order. The guitar player performs acoustic and at times has been backed by the Black Gold Band or the Dust Bowl Souls.
Moreland recorded his third album, “High On Tulsa Heat,” over a few days at his parents’ home in Oklahoma. He is a member of the annual Folk Alliance International Conference which meets in Kansas City.
Three of Moreland’s songs, “Heaven,” “Gospel” and “Your Spell” were featured on the tv show “Sons of Anarchy.”
