Kalu & The Electric Joint blend the powers of psychedelic soul music with the driving beat of rock and roll and the ancient rhythms of Africa. The Nigerian born Kalu relocated to Austin, Texas where he put together an ensemble of players who feel and follow his eclectic influences.
Frontman Kalu James emigrated from Nigeria at age 18 to claim Austin as his new home. Starting with the sounds of his homeland Kalu embraces the creative attitude of his adopted hometown while remaining true to the traditions of his past. Guitarist Jonathan “JT” Holt adds a touch of American soul to Kalu’s West African heritage. They are joined by drummer and percussionist John Speice.
Kalu and JT connected through the bustling Austin music scene writing songs together and discovering their talents complemented each other. JT is a master song craftsman who’s just as comfortable holding down the groove with his magnificent chording and rhythm as he is busting out a blistering guitar lead.
The musicians honed their vision at a weekly residency at Austin’s Continental Gallery that was originally intended to last a month but eventually stretched into three years. The ensemble’s sound palette integrates masterful songwriting and electrifying performances along with deep lyrics, ethereal arrangements and a youthful exuberance.
The group’s debut album Time Undone testifies to the band’s talent with its tight arrangements, stunning vocals and a deep well of influences. The album is a blend of ethno-funk and neo-soul with the drive of heavy hitting rock and roll and futuristic psychedelia. Recorded with Black Angels and Widespread Panic producer Brett Orrison the album features guest appearances from members of Widespread Panic and The War on Drugs. From its first note Kalu and The Electric Joint show that they are prepared to carry modern music forward while still paying tribute to the inspirations of their past.
Whether seeing Kalu and The Electric Joint in Austin’s bustling clubs or hearing Time Undone for the first time the band delivers a positive message for turbulent times, uplifting their listeners with a funky modern beat. Kalu and The Electric Joint make a lasting impression on everyone who hears them.
