Live is an American rock band from York, Pennsylvania, consisting of Ed Kowalczyk (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Chad Taylor (lead guitar, backing vocals), Patrick Dahlheimer (bass), and Chad Gracey (drums).
The band achieved worldwide success with their 1994 album Throwing Copper, which sold more than eight million copies in America. The band has sold more than 20 million albums worldwide. Live had a string of hit singles in the mid 1990’s including “Lighting Crashes,” which stayed at the top of the Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart for ten weeks in 1995.
Live’s first album 1991’s Mental Jewelry is noteworthy for Talking Head’s multi instrumentalist Jerry Harrison’s production with lyrics written by Kowalczyk that were inspired by Indian philosopher and writer Jiddu Krishnamurti.
Bassist Patrick Dahlheimer reminisces, “It was so important to have somebody else in the room to help us, especially with arrangements. I mean, we were still learning how to write songs…Jerry just seemed to know everything…this guy’s a wizard.”
It was Live’s second album Throwing Copper that brought them mainstream success. The album featured the singles “I Alone,” “All Over You,” along with the number one hits “Selling the Drama,” and “Lightning Crashes.” The album went on to achieve the number one position on the Billboard charts eventually selling more than eight million copies in America alone.
Throwing Copper’s success meant that 1997’s Secret Samadhi debuted at number one on the US album charts. Secret Samadhi contained four hit singles and eventually sold more than two million copies.
In 2004 Live released a greatest hits compilation, Awake: The Best of Live. The compilation included a previously unreleased song from the Throwing Copper sessions; “We Deal in Dreams,” along with a cover version of Johnny Cash’s “I Walk the Line.”
After a 2009 concert Live announced that the band would take a two-year hiatus to work on other projects. Kowalczyk recorded a solo album while the other band members formed The Gracious Few. When the band reformed in 2011 it was without lead singer Kowalczyk. Live returned in 2012 with Chris Shinn formerly of Unified Theory as their new lead singer.
In 2013 the band’s toured America with its new lead singer. Live’s first album to feature Shinn, The Turn was released in 2014. In 2017 Live reunited with Kowalczyk and the band’s original lineup was once again intact.
