Marcus Mumford is a British-American singer, songwriter, musician, and producer best known as the frontman and namesake of the Grammy Award-winning folk-rock group Mumford & Sons. He issued his eponymous debut solo effort in 2022.
Marcus Mumford was born in Yorba Linda, California, to English parents who are international leaders of the evangelical Christian Association of Vineyard Churches. He was raised in the London suburb of Wimbledon Chase, where he attended King’s College School. After a year of study at the University of Edinburgh, Mumford returned to London to pursue a musical career, serving as the touring drummer for singer/songwriter Laura Marling. He co-founded Mumford & Sons in 2007 with banjo/dobro player Winston Marshall, keyboardist Ben Lovett, and bassist Ted Dwane. Emerging in 2009 with the Mercury Prize-nominated Sigh No More, Mumford & Sons found international success with the releases of subsequent efforts Babel (2012), Wilder Mind (2015), and Delta (2018), all of which reached number one on the Billboard 200.
Mumford sang a cover of “Dink’s Song” with Oscar Isaac for the 2013 Coen brothers film Inside Llewyn Davis. Although he is not seen in the film, Mumford voices the protagonist’s musical partner, Mike, who dies by suicide before the beginning of the film.
Mumford is featured on the 2014 collaborative album Lost on the River: The New Basement Tapes, with other artists including Elvis Costello, Rhiannon Giddens, Taylor Goldsmith, Jim James, Jay Bellerose, and T Bone Burnett. Mumford takes co-writing credits on tracks “Kansas City”, “When I Get My Hands on You”, “The Whistle Is Blowing”, “Stranger”, and “Lost on the River #20”.
In 2022, Mumford issued his first solo album. The eponymous LP was produced by Blake Mills and featured guest spots from Brandi Carlile, Phoebe Bridgers, Clairo, and Monica Martin.
