Sheryl Crow was destined to learn music no matter what. Her mother taught her. Her parents had both performed in swing orchestras, her father on trumpet and her mother as a singer; her mother was also a piano teacher, and ensured that all her daughters learned the instrument starting in grade school.
Ms Crow was born in 1962, wrote her first song at age 13 and majored in music at the University of Missouri. Then she packed up and moved to Los Angeles, found some jingle singing work and successfully auditioned for Michael Jackson’s “Bad” tour.
Two years on the road singing back up with Michael Jackson was capped by her continued search for a record deal. Most labels wanted her to be a dance diva, which was not at all her style. She continued to write songs and sing backup for a number of artists until she met and was signed to a label, by Hugh Padgham. Now all she needed to do was find the musicians needed to help her make a record!
Her first album with the label was too ballad heavy and was shelved. Crow became depressed but was distracted by her boyfriend and his professional music buddies. They informally called themselves the Tuesday Night Music Club, a collective that met once a week in a friend’s recording studio in Pasadena to drink, jam, and work out material.
In this informal, collaborative setting, Crow revived her skills and in 1993 issued her first album, Tuesday Night Music Club. The singles from it grew slowly until “All I Wanna Do” broke through and became a super smash. She was a hit at the Grammys in early 1995, taking home honors for Best New Artist, Best Female Rock Vocal, and Record of the Year (the latter two for “All I Wanna Do”).
Since that first CD, Sheryl Crow has released ten CD’s and acted in a number of television roles. Her 2017 work is “Be Myself” and it’s single, “Halfway There” and title “Be Myself,” spinning now on K-ZAP.
This year, 2018, Cheryl has released “Wouldn’t Want To Be Like You” featuring St. Vincent, aka Annie Clark and is likely to be the forerunner to a forthcoming new, yet unnamed album.
Crow’s work encompasses elements of pop, rock, folk, country and blues. She has released 11 studio albums, two compilations, a live album and has contributed to a number of film soundtracks. She has sold more than 50 million albums worldwide. Crow has garnered nine Grammy Awards (out of 32 nominations) from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.

Crow announced the album on November 3, 2023, which came as a surprise since she had previously stated her intentions to not release another album. The news arrived just ahead of her induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame that same day. Crow explained that music and lyrics on the album stem from “sitting in the quiet and writing from a deep soul place”. The creation process started by Crow recording a couple of demos which she then sent to producer Mike Elizondo. Songs “just kept flowing” out of her and it would soon be obvious that “this was going to be an album”. Following the release of Threads four years prior, she announced to never make another record because had thought there would be “no point to it”. However, in creating Evolution, she found that the music comes from her soul. Crow hopes “whoever hears this record can feel that”. In recent years, artists from Summer Walker to Dolly Parton have covered songs with assistance from the original artist. The latest to attempt the feat is Sheryl Crow, who has recorded a new take of Peter Gabriel’s 1992 hit “Digging In The Dirt” featuring Gabriel himself.
