The Verbs are a New York City based rock ‘n’ roll band fronted by the husband and wife duo of Steve Jordan (drums and bass) his wife Meegan Voss (vocals, rhythm guitar), Tamio Okuda (guitar) and Sue Veneer (guitar). Their music has been described as “The perfect cocktail of girl group, Brit-pop, country, ska and rock and roll.”
Jordan is a Grammy winning drummer, songwriter, and record producer who had runs as the house band drummers of Saturday Night Live and Late Night With David Letterman. As a member of Keith Richards and the X-pensive Winos, he toured and recorded two albums, Talk is Cheap (1988) and Main Offender (1992). Jordan co-produced both albums and is credited with songwriting along with Richards.
Jordan is also a member of the blues rock power John Mayer Trio formed in 2005 by Mayer as a deviation from his pop-acoustic career.
Jordan has recorded with such artists as Don Henley, John Mellencamp, Andres Calamaro, Cat Stevens, Bob Dylan, Sonny Rollins, BB King, Stevie Nicks, Sheryl Crow, Neil Young, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Kelly Clarkson, and many more.
In 2009, Jordan received the Grammy Award for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media, for his work on the soundtrack scoring film for the movie Cadillac Records.
Meegan Voss is a singer/songwriter/guitarist/keyboardist who fronted the all girl punk bands The PopTarts and The Antoinettes. Voss is a classically-trained pianist who left the conservatory world and dove headlong into the early ’80s scene at CBGB’s.
As the dynamite musicians they are on their own, together as the Verbs is where Jordan’s and Voss’ studio mastery comes to the fore. The pair are highly accomplished music obsessives and masterful technicians and the Verbs’ music reflects both their similarities and differences.
Together as the Verbs they’ve proven that they can genre-hop and blend more styles successfully than most. Their 2015 album Cover Story, focused exclusively on dead-ahead versions of pop radio gems from the mid-’60s to early ’70s.
The songs they picked for the album are somehow familiar even if they aren’t always on the tip of your tongue (Clapton’s “Easy Now,” the Turtles’ “You Showed Me,” the Dave Clark Five’s “Glad All Over,” plus a standout version of “Black Is Black” by Spain’s Los Bravos).
“They’re songs that I’ve always liked. Its stuff that I wanted to remember,” says Voss, I just really like these songs and I thought, “what the hell, I’m going to do them.” [So] the driving force was great songs and great songwriters.
“When the two of us get our groove together,” says Jordan, “we sound like an engine. It’s the kind of energy I always looked for when I wanted to have a band. When we started playing together, I finally was playing with a person that had that energy, had that vibe, and knew what that was, that I was talking about.”
Their new single “Simple Kinda Girl” is a rollicking rocker and the first song off their upcoming fourth LP, Garage Sale.
“We’re rocking and rolling,” adds Jordan, who produced the single with Voss. “We’re excited about the new music, and hope you dig it as much as we do,” adds Meegan.
