June Lawn Love: Managing Thatch for a Healthy Northern CA Yard
As June heats up in Northern California, tackling thatch buildup is a key lawn care task to keep your grass thriving through summer. Here’s why it’s critical now and how Capital Arborist can help your Sacramento-area lawn shine:
Why Thatch Matters in June? 🌾
Thatch Trouble: Thatch—a layer of dead grass and roots—builds up over time, blocking water, air, and nutrients from reaching soil. In June’s warmth, this can stress your lawn.
Pest & Disease Risk: Thick thatch traps moisture, fostering fungi and pests like grubs.
Uneven Growth: Excess thatch causes patchy, weak grass, especially under summer heat.
Thatch Management Tips: 🌿
Check Thickness: Dig a small lawn section; if thatch is over ½ inch, it’s time to act.
Dethatch Sparingly: Use a power rake or dethatching machine for heavy buildup, but avoid overdoing it to protect grass.
Aerate Post-Dethatch: Core aeration helps soil recover and boosts nutrient flow.
Maintain Regularly: Mow at 3-4 inches, water deeply (1-1.5 inches weekly), and avoid over-fertilizing to prevent future thatch.
Capital Arborist’s Lawn Expertise: 🌳
Thatch Removal: Our ISA-certified team uses professional tools to dethatch efficiently without harming your lawn.
Aeration & Overseeding: We follow up with aeration and seeding to restore lushness and fill thin spots.
Custom Care Plans: We tailor fertilization and watering schedules to keep thatch in check and your lawn resilient.
Eco-Friendly Approach: We prioritize sustainable methods to promote a healthy yard and environment.

@jimmypage and @theblackcrowes discuss Live At The Greek in revealing short film
In new footage, Jimmy Page, Chris Robinson and Rich Robinson look back on the partnership that produced 2000’s Live At The Greek album.
The album was re-released in expanded form earlier this year to mark the 25th anniversary of the original.
In the 11-minute film, Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson reveals how they were introduced to Page by Led Zeppelin bandmate Robert Plant, who they’d toured with a couple of years previously.
“We were in London, we were doing a couple nights at the Royal Albert Hall,” says Robinson. “Robert’s like, ‘Can I bring Jimmy down?,’ and we were like, ‘We’d love to meet Jimmy! Of course!’ And we just hit it off like that.”
“I really admired them,” says Page. “They definitely came from the same school that I’d come from. They’re a band that clearly understood its roots and knew its roots. So there was already bond as far as I was concerned.”
“From my point of view, it was absolutely incredible,” Page continues. “There was not going to be a Led Zeppelin for me, but this was a parallel. I’m not going to say it was the next best thing, it was absolutely parallel, because it had all the augmentation of all the guitar parts, and more, and I’m playing their stuff as well and having a great time.”
The new edition of Live At The Greek – recorded over two nights at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles in October 1999, and in Wantagh, NY, the following year – is available as a six-disc vinyl set and a three-CD edition, and includes tracks by the Black Crowes omitted from the original release due to contractual restrictions set by the Crowes’ then label, Columbia Records.

Long-Out-of-Print ‘Kaleidoscopic’ Album by ‘70s ‘One Hit Wonder’ Is Resurrected
Norman Greenbaum’s “Spirit in the Sky” is one of the most iconic hits of the ‘70s, with a killer guitar riff and unforgettable lyrics. It’s been covered by a diverse list of artists including Elton John, Bauhaus, William Shatner, Doctor and the Medics, and more, and now it’s being resurrected.
On Friday, June 13, Craft Recordings is reissuing Greenbaum’s long-out-of-print debut album of the same name on vinyl with a replica jacket and lacquers cut from the original tapes. The song was also released in a new Dolby Atmos mix that’s available for streaming.
The single “Spirit in the Sky” topped the charts worldwide and eventually sold more than 2 million copies worldwide.
In a 2020 interview with Rolling Stone, Greenbaum revealed that he lifted the title “Spirit in the Sky” from a greeting card and was inspired to write the songs lyrics after watching country legend Porter Wagoner perform the gospel country song “Pastor’s Absent on Vacation” on his TV program The Porter Wagoner Show.
The song also contains the lyrics “Never been a sinner / I never sinned” that upset some Christians.
“It did upset some people. When I said I can do this, that didn’t mean I could do it perfectly,” he told Rolling Stone. “It wasn’t my religion; I just did it. I didn’t think twice about it. I took some of the seriousness out of it, but I didn’t do it as a joke or against anyone. I guess people can take offense to almost anything. There was the song about the plastic Jesus on your dashboard. They liked that one.
“[Now], quite a few churches have put it into their services and they sing it quite often. So it turned out OK. To be blunt, I don’t think it’s on the s—t list,” he added.

The Only @johnlennon @paulmccartney Album Recorded After The Beatles Broke Up
A Toot And A Snore In 74 was an unreleased, bootleg album that Lennon and McCartney made after The Beatles broke up.
It is the only known recording of the two of them following the split. McCartney happened to come by the studio at the same time that Lennon was there, along with some other contemporaries.
Lennon first mentioned the recording during a 1975 interview. From there, it was referenced by McCartney in 1997, as well as in May Pang’s 1983 book Loving John, which was an account of her short-lived relationship with Lennon.
John Lennon was at Burbank Studios producing Harry Nilsson’s album “Pussy Cats.” Paul and Linda McCartney dropped by, and a jam session kicked up. Joining them were Nilsson, Stevie Wonder, Jesse Ed Davis, May Pang, Mal Evans, Bobby Keys, and Ed Freeman.
According to reports from Pang’s book and various interviews, the jam session was heavily influenced by drugs. McCartney once described it as “hazy […] for a number of reasons.” The general consensus is that, musically, it wasn’t anything spectacular. However, it’s a testament to Lennon and McCartney’s partnership. Apparently, they picked up where they left off after not seeing each other for three years.
The session featured Lennon on guitar and vocals, with McCartney singing harmony and playing drums. Stevie Wonder was on piano, Linda McCartney on organ, and May Pang on tambourine.
Filling out the session were Jesse Ed Davis on guitar, Harry Nilsson providing vocals, and Bobby Keys on saxophone. Ed Freeman took a break from producing Don McLean in the neighboring studio and filled in on bass.
While the recordings weren’t anything to write home about, and more of an impromptu jam among friends, a bootleg album post-Beatles breakup is still a rare treasure.
While John Lennon was experiencing his “lost weekend” at this time, he still had a friend to come around and make some music with despite the circumstances.

Original Steppenwolf Guitarist Reveals How Band Actually Got the Name, Recalls Odd Way He Recorded Famous Solo
Guitarist Michael Monarch, best known as the original guitarist of rock legends Steppenwolf, recalled the band’s earliest days and how they actually got their famous name.
As Monarch recalled in a recent interview with Guitar World, one of the guys living close to the band’s frontman, John Kay, gave them the name.
“We were rehearsing in a small garage under singer John Kay’s apartment in West Hollywood,” Monarch recalled. “We were discovered there by a neighbor, Gabriel Mekkler, who was just hired as a producer and, I guess, A&R for ABC/Dunhill Records. It was his idea to change the name of the band to Steppenwolf, named after the Herman Hesse novel.”
Talking about the right place and the right time… Either way, the band eventually saw great success with their first few records.
Although Michael Monarch didn’t stay for that long, leaving in 1969, he was on the first record and was a part of Steppenwolf’s most legendary song — “Born to Be Wild.”
This absolute hard rock anthem, and a song that popularized the term “heavy metal,” helped jumpstart the new movement in music.
As it turns out, Monarch’s somewhat stereotypical guitarist-like attitude helped in this.
Mars Bonfire, the former member of The Sparrows, wrote this piece, and it eventually landed in his former bandmates’ hands. Funnily enough, he intended it as a ballad, but the final version was the complete opposite. Recalling how the song’s heavily distorted lead guitar part came to be, Monarch explained:
“I was using my Fender Esquire guitar into a Fender Concert Amp, kind of like a Super Reverb, but without the reverb, with four ten-inch speakers. It had white, round knobs and was covered in brown Tolex.”
“I had turned everything to ten, as there was no eleven back then,” he offered. “Engineers Ritchie [Podolor] and Bill [Cooper] asked me to turn it down because it was too distorted. I don’t think I did, and eventually, they thought it blended with the organ in a cool way.”
